PALS, the heart of the Empordą

EL POBLE MEDIEVAL DE PALS

The medieval town of Pals is located on the summit of the hill of Puig Aspre, with a magnificent view over the area known as the “Empordą Petit” or Empordanet. The first documents which refer to the medieval town of Pals date back to the 9th century, although there are indications that its origins are even older. The medieval town was reconstructed under the initiatives of Dr. Pi i Figueras and one time mayor Pere Servią i Cantó. Thanks to this initiative Pals was awarded the National Award for Fine Arts in 1973, the National Award for Fine Arts and Tourism in 1980, and the Medal of Honour for Tourism in Catalonia in 1986.

THE HISTORICAL CENTRE

The historical town centre contains several noteworthy buildings: theChurch of Sant Pere first built in 944, is a mixture of various styles, from Gothic to Baroque, the result of various reconstructions which the building has undergone over time. The Bell tower is located just a few metres from the church and is known as the Tower of Hours, and was constructed between the 11th and 12th centuries. Also noteworthy is the Gothic Quarterof Pals, where the buildings are made with stone, and which is known as El Pedro, the castle and the medieval walls of Pals (12th –14th centuries) which surround the high part of the old centre, where only four large houses or “torres” (Torre d'en Ramonet, Torre d'en Rom, Torre d'en Xinel·lo and Torre de l’Hospital), Ca la Pruna, is located at the entrance to the old town centre and is a fortified house dating back to the 15th century and is home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and numerous temporary exhibitions. This residential style museum has become the meeting point of the town alongside theMirador of Josep Plą, which overlooks the Empordanet.
